ROUNDTRIP THROUGH VKM

ROUND TRIP THROUGH VKM
60th Anniversary Exhibition in 4 floors

In 2023, Vendsyssel Museum of Art can celebrate its 60th anniversary, as well as the fact that it has been 20 years since the museum moved into the renovated textile factory at P. Nørkjærs Plads in the heart of Hjørring. The anniversary exhibition will present a large selection of artworks from the collection throughout the museum.

Vendsyssel Museum of Art was founded in 1963 by a number of visionary and enterprising citizens of Hjørring for the purpose of ‘creating an artistically valuable collection of modern Danish art with focus on works from artists with an affiliation with Vendsyssel’. When the museum was founded, the collection included 13 works of art. Now, the collection includes well over 5000 works of art, primarily within painting, sculpture, handicraft and printmaking. The collection is continuously expanding, and at the exhibition, you can experience several of the latest acquisitions, incl. a video by photographer Joséphine Douet and paintings and prints by Lisbeth Eugenie Christensen, Cathrine Raben Davidsen, Ditte Ejlerskov, Ulrik Møller and Maria Wandel.

At the anniversary exhibition, you are invited on a tour de force through the collection, and the artworks will be put into perspective. The collection covers a wide field – as regards to scenes, materials and forms of expression. There are several collections within the collection, such as the art collector Erling Hansen’s large collection of artist self-portraits, the versatile artworks of local visual artist Kristian Hildebrandt, and the goldsmith Bent Exner’s extensive collection of unique jewellery, sketches etc.

A large part of the collection has nature and landscapes as its focal point, which is reflected in works by painters such as Poul Anker Bech, tapestry weavers such as Jenny Hansen, or ceramic artists such as Tove Anderberg.

In 2009, Vendsyssel Museum of Art was expanded with a research centre for Niels Larsen Stevns, the artist behind the fresco decoration of the former central library at Brinck Seidelinsgade, where the art museum was located until 2003. Niels Larsen Stevns is a pivotal chapter in the museum’s history, and the collection has connections to several of the other key artists of the museum, such as Frede Christoffersen.

Throughout the spring, there will be plenty of events for everyone.
